Diet chart for gallstones

Food cannot dissolve gallstones, but it can make pain attacks fewer. Regular, light home meals with less fried food are the aim, not a fat-free diet.

½ Vegetables and salad ¼ Dal, curd, paneer, egg, fish, chicken ¼ Roti, rice or millet
  1. Eat at fixed times, three meals and one or two small snacks. Long gaps and skipped meals let bile thicken.
  2. Less fried and fatty food. A small measured amount of oil is fine; heavy, oily meals bring on pain.
  3. If you need to lose weight, lose it slowly, about half a kg a week. Crash diets and fasting make new stones.

Eat more

  • Vegetables: lauki, tori, bhindi, palak, beans, cabbage, carrot, peas
  • Atta with chokar, daliya, oats, bajra, jowar
  • Whole fruit twice a day: apple, guava, papaya, orange, pear
  • Dal, chana, rajma, sprouts
  • Low-fat curd, chaas and toned milk
  • Water through the day

Eat less, and measure

  • Cooking oil and ghee together: 3 to 4 teaspoons per person for the whole day
  • Full-cream milk, paneer, cheese: small portions
  • Eggs: one a day, boiled or as a bhurji with little oil
  • Chicken and fish: grilled or in a light curry, not fried
  • Maida: white bread, biscuits, naan, noodles
  • Sugar and sweets: a little only

Avoid

  • Fried food: puri, bhature, samosa, pakora, kachori
  • Malai, makkhan and cream-based gravies
  • Mutton, fatty meat, sausages and salami
  • Cakes, pastries, cream biscuits
  • Cold drinks and sweet packaged juice
  • Crash diets, long fasts and weight-loss powders

Common myths

A "gallbladder flush" of oil and lemon juice passes the stones.
It does not. It can bring on severe pain.
You must eat no fat at all.
A little fat is needed. Only heavy, fried food is the problem.
Desi medicine or pathri-tod churan dissolves gallstones.
None does. Stones that cause pain need a doctor.
After the gallbladder is removed, you can never eat normally.
Most people return to normal food within a few weeks.

Dr. Arya’s note for you

Upper belly pain with fever or shivering, yellow eyes, pain going to the back with vomiting, or pain lasting more than a few hours: go to hospital at once.

This is general advice for adults. If you also have diabetes, follow the diabetes chart for sugar and rice; with fatty liver, the weight advice is the same. When in doubt, ask Dr. Arya.
